Description from the seller
Gabriel Perelle (1604–1677) – Harbour Scene with Ship and Figures – Original 17th-century circular etching
Fine and lively maritime landscape etching by the celebrated French royal engraver Gabriel Perelle, one of the most important landscape printmakers of the Grand Siècle and founder of the Perelle dynasty.
This refined circular composition depicts an animated harbour scene: figures load and unload goods beside a large moored ship, while smaller boats and distant vessels animate the horizon. A monumental stone tower dominates the left side of the composition, creating a dramatic contrast with the open sky and the busy waterfront. The delicate treatment of clouds, water and foliage is characteristic of Perelle’s elegant and atmospheric style.
Signed in the plate “Mariette exc.” (publisher Pierre Mariette) and “Perelle f.”, confirming the Parisian publication and the authorship of the engraver. Numbered “13” in the upper right corner, indicating that the print belongs to a series.
Condition: Good condition considering age; light toning, minor handling and small marginal irregularities typical of early prints.
A highly decorative and collectible example of French Baroque maritime printmaking, representative of Perelle’s sought-after landscape and topographical views.
