Et Dabo Sanctificatione Mea, a 16th‑century Belgian gravure by Maarten de Vos (afte) after Sadeler, with a religious theme The Communion of Saints, measuring 21 × 25 cm, signed in the plate and requiring restoration.
Description from the seller
Original 16th-century engraving – Johannes Sadeler & Maerten de Vos – "Le Credo"
(Rare 16th Century Original Engraving – The Communion of Saints)
Description
Magnificent original copper-engraved plate (engraving) made circa 1579–1580 in Antwerp. This plate is from the famous series Symbolum Apostolicum (The Apostles’ Creed).
Subject: "The Communion of the Saints". Illustration from the Acts of the Apostles showing the early Christian community sharing its goods. A masterpiece of Flemish Mannerism.
Artists: Maerten de Vos (Invenit) & Johannes Sadeler I (Fecit).
Authenticity / Paper: An antique print on handmade laid paper with pontuseaux and vergeures visible through transparency. Includes the historical legal inscription "Cum privilegio Regis".
Provenance: Collectible piece with an ancient heraldic seal at the top left (coat of arms with two lions) and inventory number "25" on the back.
Condition: Beautiful, high-contrast print (strong impression). Presence of foxing and margins trimmed near the gutter, indicating its 440-year age.
This engraving is not a mere illustration; it is a testament to the artistic power of Antwerp in the 16th century. The fineness of the details, notably on the gold pieces and the drapery, is typical of Sadeler's hand, the court engraver.
