Engraving after Gabriel Metsu (1629–1667) entitled L'Artiste, a 17th‑century Dutch Golden Age subject, copper engraving on laid paper, 31.5 × 22.5 cm, signed in the plate, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Elegant 19th-century engraving depicting “The Artist” after the famous Dutch painter Gabriel Metsu (1629-1667), one of the masters of the Dutch Golden Age and contemporary of Vermeer.
Engraver: H. Lefort sc.
Printer: Imp. A. Salmon (Paris)
Technique: Copper engraving
Dimensions: 31.5 × 22.5 cm
Antique laid paper with a crown watermark visible through its translucence.
(The crown watermark clearly indicates that this is high-quality French paper, probably produced between 1740 and 1780, in one of the major French paper-producing regions, with a strong probability for Angoumois or Auvergne.)
Consult the work by Raymond Gaudriault 'Watermarks and Other Characteristics of Papers Manufactured in France in the 17th and 18th Centuries' (1995), available on Gallica, which lists thousands of French watermarks with their provenance.
Excellent print quality, with sharp and well-defined contrasts.
Paper: Laid paper in very good overall condition.
Margins: full margins with decorative framing
Defects: Some very light foxing spots visible (typical of old paper)
Watermark (Crown): Perfectly visible through transparency,
Overall good condition. Excellent print quality with sharp contrasts. A few very light foxing marks typical of old paper (see photos).
