Jan Cremer, a writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, which meant that his upbringing was entirely the responsibility of his mother. Jan's mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war, Jan Cremer was placed in foster families and colony homes by child protection services. In the 1950s, he held various jobs, served with the marines, and worked for some time as a sailor on the high seas. In 1958, he attended art academy courses in Arnhem and The Hague for a few months. Cremer lived for a time in Ibiza and moved to New York in 1964. Afterwards, he alternated between living in America and Europe. As a writer, Cremer became instantly famous with 'Ik Jan Cremer' (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence, and adventure. As a result, the literary quality of his writing was not highly regarded by everyone. The novel was banned from libraries for a long time. 'Ik Jan Cremer' was published in many languages. Besides novels, Jan Cremer wrote travel reports and plays. His art consists of paintings, graphics, gouaches, and often depicts Dutch and Italian landscapes in vivid colors.
