Description from the seller
Pol Mara (1920–1998), Belgian artist
s.t. - 1978
Color lithography on heavy art paper
54.5 × 72.5 cm
E.C. F/O (épreuve de commerce / buiten oplage)
From: Art on Campus – Art Folder 1
This lithograph by Pol Mara from 1978 is a characteristic example of his figurative, psychologically charged visual language from the seventies.
The work depicts a young woman in an alienating, fragmented composition, in which vertical image strips and architectural elements visually cut through the body.
The combination of soft skin tones, cool blue-gray areas, and subtle linework creates a tension between intimacy and distance.
The themes—the vulnerable, often introspective female figure—are characteristic of Mara’s oeuvre and align with his international reputation as a representative of the new figuration in Belgium. His work was widely exhibited during this period both at home and abroad and is included in numerous museum collections.
This copy concerns an E.C. (épreuve de commerce), marked "E.C. F/O", which indicates a commercial/ trade proof outside the numbered edition. Such copies are typically distributed in limited quantities and enjoy a special collecting value within graphic editions.
Bottom right signed in pencil “Pol Mara”. Bottom left marked “E.C. F/O”.
Published in the portfolio Kunst op de Campus – Kunstmap 1, a Belgian graphic portfolio in which works by renowned artists were brought together.
Condition: in good condition. The sheet shows light, even aging of the paper and minimal signs of use in the margins, appropriate to its age. No conspicuous tears or restorations.
A high-quality, representative lithograph from Mara’s mature period, with clear relevance to his graphic oeuvre and appealing to collectors of Belgian postwar art and figurative printmaking.
