Description from the seller
Michel Seuphor (1901–1999) - s.t.
1978
Color screen print on heavy art paper
72.5 × 54.5 cm
Edition: E.C. F/O (trade proof / not for sale)
Publication: Art on Campus – Art Portfolio 1
This monumental silkscreen from 1978 is a representative example of Michel Seuphor's late-constructivist visual language. The composition is built from fine horizontal lines, against which a vertical, dynamic assemblage of geometric color fields contrasts. Red, blue, yellow, and gray tones are combined in a rhythmic stacking, creating a balance between strict structure and playful movement.
Seuphor – pseudonym of Fernand Berckelaers – was not only an artist but also an influential theorist and advocate of abstract art. He maintained close contact with international avant-garde circles and published important studies on abstract and constructivist art. His own body of work aligns with the traditions of De Stijl and constructivism, with a strong emphasis on line, rhythm, and mathematical ordering.
This page was issued as part of the portfolio 'Art on Campus – Art Folder 1', a high-quality Belgian graphic-arts publication from 1978. It is a copy marked E.C. F/O (épreuve de commerce / hors commerce), indicating a limited distribution outside the regular numbered edition and increasing its value for collectors.
Signed in pencil in the lower right corner “Seuphor”.
Condition: In good condition. Paper shows light, even aging appropriate for its age. No cracks or restorations visible.
A large-format, substantively strong work by a key figure in international abstract art, of particular relevance to collectors of constructivist and postwar Belgian graphic arts.
