Description from the seller
Naked seated woman - Jan Sierhuis
This work by Jan Sierhuis shows a naked woman in his characteristic expressive style. Sierhuis uses powerful brushstrokes and vivid colors to emphasize not only the body but, above all, the emotion and presence of the figure. In his work, it is less about a classical ideal of beauty and more about the energy, movement and human experience that the body can express. It is a typical example of his personal approach to figurative art: direct, dynamic and full of life.
After the war, Jan Sierhuis developed into an expressionist painter, influenced by, among others, Van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso. Together with Appel, Corneille and Lucebert, he was at the heart of post-war developments in art.
In 1945 Sierhuis was admitted to the evening program of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, which he left after a conflict. In 1947 he was involved with the group van de Experimentele, and in 1948 with the CoBrA group, although he was too young to become an official member. Later, in 1962, he was co-founder of the Amsterdam artists’ group Groep Scorpio.
In the fifties and sixties, Sierhuis mainly worked abstractly. He then returned to the human figure and shifted his focus to figurative themes such as dancing figures, portraits and landscapes. He spent many summers in Spain, where his passion for flamenco had a major influence on his work. This dance embodies everything his painting is characterized by: color, emotion, movement and rhythm.
Sierhuis has always gone his own way. Freedom and expressiveness form the red thread in his oeuvre.
Size of work with frame: 84 x 74 cm
Size of work without frame: 82 x 70 cm
