Description from the seller
Mark Verstockt (1930–2014)
Composition, 1978
72.5 × 54.5 cm
E.C. F/O
Publication: Art on Campus – Art Portfolio 1
This work from 1978 is part of the portfolio Kunst op de Campus – Kunstmap 1, a prestigious publication in which leading Belgian artists from the geometric and constructive tradition were gathered. It concerns a copy marked E.C. F/O (épreuve de collaboration / hors d’édition), outside the regular edition.
The composition is a powerful example of Verstockt's thorough investigation into grid structures, modulation, and serial construction. The work is composed of concentric square fields, in which various grid patterns alternate: fine-grained grids, diagonal intersections, and dense black areas create an optical tension field between the center and the periphery.
Through repetition and systematic variation, a visual pulsation arises that is characteristic of Verstockt's body of work from the seventies. The work balances between mathematical rigor and optical vibrancy, and aligns with international developments within concrete art, minimal art, and the constructivist tradition.
The page is in good condition, with strong black-and-white contrasts. Signed at the bottom in pencil.
A representative and collectible work from an important period in Mark Verstockt's oeuvre, and a pronounced example of Belgian geometric abstraction.
