Landschaft is an oil painting on wood by E. Mallard (19th century), Realism, 22 × 37 cm, France, signed, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
E. Mallard. (Active in the 19th century).
Wide river landscape with a view of a town in the evening light.
Oil on panel.
Signed bottom right as well as on a nameplate on the frame. 22 x 37 cm (approx. 8.7 x 14.6 in).
E. Mallard stands in the tradition of European landscape painting of the 19th century, which masterfully traces the transition from Romantic vedute to atmospheric plein-air painting. His work is characterized by a deep understanding of light moods and the harmonious interweaving of natural space and architecture.
• Narrative depth in the picture space: The figures on the riverside path lend the composition a lively, human dimension and deftly guide the viewer’s gaze into the depths of the landscape.
• Virtuosic brushwork: Mallard uses the smooth texture of the wooden support for precise details in the foreground, while the impasto treatment of the sky and the water surfaces emphasizes the fleeting nature of the moment.
• Iconography of calm: The depiction of a peacefully flowing body of water in combination with the setting sun serves as a classic emblem of contemplation and the constancy of nature.
• Condition: Authentic, untouched original state; the wooden panel carrier shows on the back numerous historically caused wormholes from inactive Anobium infestation. The representative gilded stucco frame presents clear signs of age as well as substantial damages and gaps in the decor (see illustrations).
