Corneille, Roermond, 1945, mixed media, 35 cm by 39 cm, hand-signed, original Cobra-period artwork from the Netherlands.
Description from the seller
Original early work by Corneille.
Corneille
Roermond
Watercolor with pencil
21 x 25 cm
Provenance: Venduehuis Den Haag
In Corneille's work, birds frequently appear as powerful symbols of freedom, movement, and imagination. A crow has a special role in this: with its dark color and clean, streamlined form, it often represents mystery, strength, or the unknown. Corneille combines the crow with his characteristic bright colors and simplified shapes, making the animal seem at once menacing and poetic. This fits with his CoBrA background, in which spontaneous expression and intuitive visual language are central.
Corneille (1922–2010) was a co-founder of the CoBrA movement and an important innovator in post-war art. His work evolved from abstract to figurative, with recurring themes such as birds, women, and flowers. This colorful silkscreen print is a fine example of his later style.
Appointments for viewing are available. We have our own framing workshop (celebrating 85 years) and work with recognized restorers (Restauratoren Nederland). Please feel free to contact us via our website.
