Description from the seller

The Japanese watercolour painter, engraver, lithographer and ceramist Yasse Tabuchi was born in Kitakyüshu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan in 1921.

After being mobilized in the navy and air force during the final years of World War II, he studied art history at Tokyo University of Arts from 1946 to 1951, while beginning to paint. In 1951, he left his family and his country for France where he arrived by boat in Marseille. The young man decides to start a new life in France and goes to Paris. In 1959, in order to have a large space to work, he buys a farm in Essonne, in Vauhallan in the south of the capital; he will be very close to Foujita who lives very close to him.
Yasse Tabuchi meets Pierre Alechinsky, Asger Jorn and the painters of the Co-BrA group; his works, although strongly influenced by surrealism, come close to abstraction. In the second half of the 1950s, the artist became particularly interested in lyrical abstraction and explored chiaroscuro in order to create works with very strong colour contrasts; we know the close links between lyrical abstraction and Far Eastern calligraphy and ideograms.

Maintaining variable relations with reality, playing with evocations of skies, water, wind, hills, vast impetuous graphics, worked in sought-after materials, willingly in dark backlight on a light background, or on the contrary in chiaroscuro of violent whites on a dark background, invade the surface of the canvas, rolling up on themselves until they are completely occupied. After this period, Yasse Tabuchi "starts again" from Matisse, or more precisely from what Henri Matisse himself takes from the Japanese of the 19th century, to paint, after the violence of the elements, the joy of living, of being in the world and of looking at everything that lives around you, in the works are revealing of his radical change of psychological climate.
The artist created several architectural decorations, among which we should mention the important hall ensemble of the Philips Cultural Centre in Eindhoven (Netherlands) and the huge ceramic wall of the 20th Century Art Museum in Ikeda, Japan.

The artist's work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions since 1955 (Paris, Brussels, Milan, Copenhagen, Malmö, Tokyo, etc) and in group exhibitions (Salon de Mai, Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, Tokyo Biennial, Sao Paulo Biennial, etc).
Yasse Tabuchi died in Vauhallan, in 2009, he was 88 years old.
