Description from the seller
Clemens Briels – Perdiola Cabeza
Perdiola Cabeza is a colorful and expressive work by Clemens Briels in which his characteristic Antipodisme style clearly comes through. The title, Spanish-sounding, reinforces the playful and international character of his visual language.
In the work, strong color contrasts, dynamic shapes, and stylized figures are central. Briels combines imagination and symbolism into a vibrant composition in which opposites — such as movement and stillness, light and dark — engage in dialogue with each other. As is often the case in his oeuvre, the work invites the viewer to discover their own meaning in a world full of energy and imagination.
Clemens Briels, born in Son in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist both at home and abroad. His works are included in various renowned art collections, and he was chosen as the first Dutch artist to be named Official Olympic Artist for the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Behind Clemens Briels’ artworks always lies a story; his works are small anecdotes from a society that is the opposite. Clemens Briels developed his own style, Antipodisme: he imagines the opposite of the stereotype, the learned. The viewer is confronted with another, fantastical perspective on everyday things and is often surprised as a result.
Briels imagines experiences he gathered in the Orient, the Caribbean, and North and South America. In addition, traditional Central and South American music is an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration. The Cuban son, mambo, merengue, and the souk, with a lightly erotic sauce draped over the music tones, compel him to create intriguing paintings.
Clemens Briels’ artworks are never bound by time and depict universal themes, cosmopolitan visions of daily life. Briels translates his experiences in his own way, in his own unique fantasy world. Color is the tool, the story is his message. The artist stimulates the viewer’s imagination by showing other images than those we are expected to see. Because stereotypes are learned by us and not imaginative interpretations of the surrounding things and events, the viewer often encounters surprises.
