Description from the seller
Anton Martineau – Appassionato I
Appassionato I reflects the intense, emotional power that is characteristic of Martineau’s oeuvre. The Italian title for “passionate” points to a charged, almost musical experience of the subject.
In the work, expressive lines, powerful forms and direct imagery are central. Martineau does not aim for realistic rendering, but for conveying feeling and inner tension. As is often the case in his work, there is a dynamic interplay between movement and emotion, giving the composition a strong, almost dramatic appearance.
As is often the case in his work, it is not about realistic details, but about the inner experience of passion, longing and connectedness. The composition radiates rhythm and energy, matching the fiery nature of the tango.
Anton Martineau (1926–2017) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, graphic artist and sculptor. His work is characterized by an expressionist, figurative style in which emotion and human experience are central.
Martineau depicted themes such as love, death, relationships and existential tension in powerful, sometimes raw compositions with direct imagery. In addition to being a visual artist, he was also a poet, which is evident in the symbolic and narrative charge of his work.
