Jacques Callot (1592-1635), da - I due Zanni

Beautiful anonymous engraving, in a 19th-century issue, which reproduces fairly faithfully but as a counterpart, a plate belonging to the series of masks of the Commedia dell’Arte to which Callot devoted himself during his long stay in Italy but which he printed only upon his return to France, after 1621.

A specimen with margins, on heavy 19th-century paper, in good condition, only a little stained by time (see photo).

In an open space two "Zanni", characters of the Commedia dell'Arte, in ragged clothing and wearing masks, facing each other, seem to dance and talk while gesticulating; around them numerous smaller figures, also in costume.
