Enrico Baj (Milan, 1924 – Vergiate, 2003) was an Italian painter, sculptor, anarchist, and essayist.
After studying at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, in 1951 he founded the Nuclear Art Movement together with Sergio Dangelo, an artistic project born in response to the atomic shock of World War II and aimed at redefining the forms of art. Fidanzato ideale della Patafisica and close to international currents such as Surrealism and the CoBrA group, Baj formed friendships and collaborations with giants of culture such as Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miró, Umberto Eco and André Breton (who wrote essays dedicated precisely to his work). Renowned worldwide for his “Generals” and his “Dames,” Baj used braids, medals, buttons, and mirrors to expose with sharp irony the power, bureaucracy, and social hypocrisy.
