Description from the seller
Jan Cremer – Tuscany
Etching in a limited and signed edition. In this work Jan Cremer depicts the Tuscan landscape with powerful, expressive lines and a strong sense of rhythm and light. The composition breathes the Mediterranean atmosphere that is so characteristic of his Italian period.
A characteristic graphic work in which nature, energy and craft come together.
Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, which meant that Jan’s upbringing fell entirely to his mother. Jan’s mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war Jan Cremer was placed in foster homes and colony houses by child protection. In the fifties he held various jobs, served with the marines and spent some time as a sailor on the high seas. In 1958 he attended a course at the art academy in Arnhem and The Hague for a few months. Cremer lived for some time on Ibiza and left in 1964 for New York. Afterwards he lived alternately in America and Europe. As a writer Cremer became famous at once with “I Jan Cremer” (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. Consequently, the literary merit of his authorship was not held in very high regard by everyone. The novel was kept out of libraries for a long time. “I, Jan Cremer” appeared in many languages. Besides novels, Cremer wrote travel reports and stage works. The art of Jan Cremer consists of paintings, graphic works and gouaches and often depicts Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in bright colors.
Dimensions of the work with frame: 112 x 139 cm
Dimensions of the work without frame: 83 x 111 cm
Viewing is, of course, possible. In addition, we have our own in-house framers, who are celebrating their 85th anniversary year.
