EXTRA ARTIST INFO:
Paul Snoek was the pseudonym of Edmond André Coralie Schietekat (born December 17, 1933 in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium – died October 19, 1981 in Tielt, Belgium). Snoek was a versatile artist: poet, prose writer and visual artist (painter/graphic artist).
From a young age he showed an interest in painting and literature. During his student years he connected with experimental Dutch and Belgian art and literary circles, including the Cobra movement and the Vlaamse Vijfenvijftigers (the Five of the Fifties).
In 1955 he co-founded the avant-garde magazine Gard Sivik, together with fellow experimenters such as Gust Gils and Hugues C. Pernath.
Snoek initially painted in a style aligned with Cobra, and later became active again in the visual arts from about 1972, after which he largely dedicated himself to painting. He also experimented with assemblage objects ("Snoekquariums").
As an artist Snoek stood not only in literature, but also in painting between modernism, avant-garde and personal expression – he produced both abstract and figurative works.
