EXTRA INFO ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Paul Snoek was the pseudonym of Edmond André Coralie Schietekat (born December 17, 1933 in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium – died October 19, 1981 in Tielt, Belgium). Snoek was a versatile artist: poet, prose writer, and visual artist (painter/graphic artist).
From a young age he showed interest in painting and literature. During his student days he came into contact with experimental Dutch and Belgian art and literary circles, including the Cobra movement and the Flemish Vijfenvijftigers.
In 1955 he was co-founder of the avant-garde magazine Gard Sivik, together with colleagues of experimentation such as Gust Gils and Hugues C. Pernath.
Snoek initially painted in a style aligned with the Cobra movement, and later became active again in the visual arts from around 1972, after which he devoted himself almost exclusively to painting. He also experimented with assemblage objects ("Snoekquariums").
As an artist Snoek stood not only in literature, but also in painting between modernism, avant-garde, and personal expression – he created both abstract and figurative works.
