Like his father, Jan Simon Sr., Jan Simon Knikker Jr. is regarded as part of the late flowering of the Hague School. He lived and worked for most of his life in The Hague, where he was a pupil at the Academy of Visual Arts. He specialized in painting Impressionist landscapes and lively cityscapes, with a focus on conveying a certain mood and atmosphere. His cityscapes, in particular, were highly favored abroad. From their home on the De La Reykade on the edge of the city with wide views over the countryside, father and son drew their inspiration. Together the painters had a high productivity and sold much of their work through the art trade. That brought Knikker Jr. no windfall and he increasingly lived as a bon vivant, well-dressed and finely turned-out. He preferred to work only during the day; painting by artificial light was out of the question, hence his oeuvre mainly consisted of landscapes and cityscapes.
Viewing is, of course, possible. In addition, we have our own in-house framery/frameshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. We also make use of restorers from the trade association: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you would like to take advantage of this, of course we would be happy to hear from you.
