Description from the seller
This is a drawing in mixed media by Jan Sluijters (1881-1957). It shows a mother nursing her baby. The fine pencil lines form the basis of the composition, while he adds subtle, colored accents with pastel. These details give the work extra vitality and make the whole piece particularly engaging.
In addition to landscapes and cityscapes, Sluijters produced a lot of portraits, especially. He enjoyed, in particular, although he worked in a variety of styles, his art remained figurative in nature.
Jan Sluijters belongs to the pioneers of modernism in the Netherlands. In his ongoing search for new forms of expression, he introduced an innovative use of light and color in Dutch painting and made an important contribution to the development of modern art in the Netherlands.
