Description from the seller
Jan Cremer – Tuscany
Limited edition lithograph in a signed and numbered edition. In this work, Jan Cremer depicts the Tuscan landscape with bold, expressive lines and a strong sense of rhythm and light. The composition breathes the Mediterranean atmosphere that is so characteristic of his Italian period.
A characteristic graphic work in which nature, energy and craft come together.
Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, so Jan’s upbringing was entirely the responsibility of his mother. Jan’s mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war, Jan Cremer was placed in foster homes and colony houses by child welfare. In the fifties he held various jobs, served with the marines and spent some time as a sailor on the open sea. In 1958 he attended, for a few months, a course at the art academy in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived for a while on Ibiza and left for New York in 1964. He then lived alternately in America and Europe. As a writer, Cremer gained instant fame with “Ik, Jan Cremer” (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. As a result, the literary quality of his writing was not regarded as very high by everyone. The novel was kept off the libraries for a long time. “Ik, Jan Cremer” appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travel reports and stage works. Cremer’s art consists of paintings, graphic art and gouaches and often portrays Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in vivid colors.
