Description from the seller
Jan Cremer – Tuscany
Limited and signed edition linocut. In this work, Jan Cremer portrays the Tuscan landscape with bold, expressive lines and a strong sense of rhythm and light. The composition breathes the Mediterranean atmosphere that is so characteristic of his Italian period.
A characteristic graphic work in which nature, energy and craft come together.
Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, so the upbringing of Jan fell entirely to his mother. Jan’s mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war, Jan Cremer was placed in foster homes and colony houses by child protection. In the fifties he had various jobs, served with the marines and worked for a time as a deckhand on the open seas. In 1958 he briefly attended an art academy in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived for a while on Ibiza and left in 1964 for New York. Thereafter he lived alternately in America and Europe. As a writer he became instantly famous with “I, Jan Cremer” (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. Consequently, the literary merit of his authorship was not regarded as highly by all. The novel remained out of libraries for a long time. “I, Jan Cremer” appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travel reports and stage works. The art of Jan Cremer consists of paintings, graphic art and gouaches and frequently depicts Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in vivid colors.
