Ludwig Wilding (Grünstadt, May 19, 1927 – Buchholz in der Nordheide, January 4, 2010)
One of the leading exponents of kinetic art in Germany. Wilding was born in Grünstadt; after studying art history and philosophy at the University of Mainz, he attended the courses at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Willi Baumeister.
In 1960 Wilding was in contact with GRAV in Paris and became a member of the Nouvelle Tendance; he participated with this group in 1965 in the exhibition at the Musee des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and in the same year in the major exhibition The Responsive Eye at MoMA in New York. In 1967 his work was included in the exhibition Kinetika at the Museum des 20 Jahrhunderts in Vienna. In 1983 his work was included in L’ultima avanguardia, Palazzo Reale, Milan. In 2004 some pieces were shown in the exhibition Eyes, Lies, and Illusions, Hayward Gallery, London. In 2013 the Dep Art Gallery brought Wilding’s works back to the exhibition, after almost ten years from the last Italian show curated by Getulio Alviani at Arte Struktura.
