Description from the seller
WAYNE THIEBAUD OFFSET LITHOGRAPHY
OP ART EXHIBIT POSTER " BAQUERY case
4 Pie Rows, 1961
Rows of pies
Oil on canvas
Collection of the Wayne Thiebaud Foundation
Sacramento, California
Pie Rows presents a segment of a counter covered with pie slices arranged on plates, which one could mentally extend to infinity. It is one of the early examples of still lifes that would become emblematic of Wayne Thiebaud’s work.
Images of refrigerated display cases filled with cakes and other sweets would follow. These foods, typifically American, interested him because they manifested ritualized behaviors and cultural practices. In Pie Rows, Thiebaud uses pie slices as a subject allowing him to explore different possibilities of composition, form, color, light and texture.
On numerous occasions, he has clarified that they could also simply be seen as the perspective representation and thus a shortcut of circle segments.
The application of painting corresponds to the gesture of spreading cream or icing on the cakes. By thus combining a gestural trace with the geometric rigidity of triangles, parallelograms and ovals, Thiebaud created a work that is both representational and abstract.
