Description from the seller
Jan Cremer – Tuscany
Woodcut in a limited and signed edition. In this work Jan Cremer depicts the Tuscan landscape with bold, expressive lines and a strong sense of rhythm and light. The composition breathes the Mediterranean atmosphere that is so characteristic of his Italian period.
A characteristic graphic work in which nature, energy and craft come together.
Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, causing Jan's upbringing to be entirely the responsibility of his mother. Jan's mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war Jan Cremer was placed in foster families and colony homes by child protection. In the 1950s he held various jobs, served with the marines and for some time worked as a sailor on the high seas. In 1958 he completed a few months of training at the art academies in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived for a while on Ibiza and moved to New York in 1964. Afterwards he alternated living in America and Europe. As a writer Cremer suddenly became famous with "Ik Jan Cremer" (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. As a result the literary merit of his authorship was not held in very high esteem by all. The novel was kept out of libraries for a long time. "Ik Jan Cremer" appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travelogues and plays. The art of Jan Cremer consists of paintings, graphics and gouaches and often portrays Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in vivid colors.
