Description from the seller
“L’oiseau multicolore” is a characteristic work of the Dutch Cobra artist Corneille (Guillaume Corneille Beverloo, 1922–2010). The title means The colorful bird, a motif that often recurs in his oeuvre.
In this work a brightly colored, stylized bird is central. Corneille uses strong contour lines and bright hues such as red, yellow, blue and green. The shapes are simple and almost childlike, in keeping with the free and spontaneous style of the CoBrA movement, of which he was a co-founder.
The bird symbolises in Corneille’s work often freedom, imagination and a connection with nature. With L’oiseau multicolore he shows how color and fantasy are more important than realistic representation: it’s about expression, emotion and playfulness.
Corneille (1922–2010) was a co-founder of the CoBrA movement and an important innovator within postwar art. His work developed from abstract to figurative, with recurring themes such as birds, women and flowers. This colorful silkscreen is a fine example of his later style.
Dimensions of the work without a frame: 52 x 73 cm
Viewing possible. We have our own framing workshop (85th anniversary) and work with recognized restorers (Restauratoren Nederland). Please feel free to contact us via our website.
