About Jean Giraud, aka MOEBIUS /

Jean Giraud, also known as Mœbius or Gir, is a legendary author and illustrator of comics. Born in 1938 in Nogent-sur-Marne, he entered the Écoles des Arts Appliqués in Paris in 1954.

He left France two years later to join his mother in Mexico, where he stayed for eight months. He absorbed the desert landscapes under the influence of his master Jijé (Joseph Gillain), becoming his assistant and helping to create an episode of Jerry Spring, La Route de Coronado (1960), whose main character would later inspire Blueberry. In 1963, he created with Jean-Michel Charlier – then director of the magazine Pilote – the Blueberry series, which he continued after Charlier’s passing and which today counts about thirty albums, not to mention a roughly equal number of works produced in collaboration with other artists, writers and illustrators.

At the same time, under the MOEBIUS signature, he began in 1962 a new source of inspiration focused on humor, fantasy and science fiction. He was also the author of numerous illustrations, paintings and advertising work.

Co-founder in 1975 of the magazine Métal Hurlant and of the publishing house Les Humanoïdes Associés, Jean Giraud developed there a unique style signed Mœbius. He published works that revolutionized the creative aspect of comics, such as Arzach (1976) and Le Garage hermétique (1979), for which he was also the writer. On a script by Alejandro Jodorowsky, he then began the epic of John Difool in L’Incal (1980), a series whose success placed him among the most innovative sci‑fi artists, before starting the series Le Monde d’Edena.

His drawings also caught the attention of major filmmakers with whom he collaborated on several films: Ridley Scott’s Alien (costumes), René Laloux’s Les Maîtres du temps (storyboard), Steven Lisberger’s Tron (costumes), James Cameron’s Abyss (underwater creatures), and Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element, to name only a few.

In the mid-1980s, Jean Giraud moved to the United States to develop these cinematic projects as well as write his own screenplays.

From 1988, he returned to France. With a new family, he continued his career, reviving his flagship Blueberry series as writer and artist (Mister Blueberry, Dust, OK Corral, Geronimo, etc.), the continuation of Edena (the Goddess, Stel, SRA, the Repairers), La Folle du sacré cœur, and several film projects: Starwatcher, Arzak Rapsody, La planète encore…

In 1997 he re-founded his own publishing house with his wife Isabelle, Mœbius Production-Stardom, where they publish books including the Inside Mœbius series, Arzach l’Arpenteur and precious limited editions such as La Faune de Mars or Le Major. They also publish serigraphs, digigraphs, and organize exhibitions dedicated to his work for about a decade in France as well as in Europe (Germany, Belgium, Italy…) and in Asia (Korea, Japan).

A major exhibition was devoted to him at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, titled MOEBIUS-TRANSE-FORME from October 2010 to March 2011.

He died in Paris on March 10, 2012.
