“In this series, the master from Marche moves away from realistic documentation to reach a form of lyrical abstraction, where the boundary between sky and earth becomes almost indistinguishable. For Giacomelli, the series of the “Gabbiani” (Gulls) represented a moment of inner reflection. The flight of the birds becomes a metaphor for Freedom and Solitude; the chaotic yet harmonious movement of the flock reflects the unrest and poetic search of the author; one sees the Transfiguration of the Landscape: As in his arable-field photographs, here too Giacomelli “re-reads” nature, transforming a common event into a symbolic, timeless image.”
