Biography of Hoang Anh.
Born in 1984 in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam, he lives and works in Hanoi.
Originally from Thanh Hoa province, located about 150 km south of Hanoi, Hoang Anh belongs to the pivotal generation of Vietnamese artists (the 8x generation) who combine cultural heritage with contemporary abstraction. A graduate of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, he has established himself on Hanoi’s art scene with a bold approach to material and color.
Graduated from the Artistic Talents program (class 13) at the Thanh Hoa College of Culture and Arts
Graduated from the Painting Department (class 48) at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts
Style and Artistic Approach
Hoang Anh’s work is distinguished by an intense exploration of texture and movement. Although he explores varied themes such as landscapes, nature, and the female figure, it is in abstraction that he reveals his full expressive power:
• The energy of gesture: a devotee of oil painting and acrylic, he frequently uses a palette knife to apply color in bold horizontal strokes. This gesture creates a nearly musical rhythm on the canvas.
• Chromatic contrasts: his work plays on the contrast between neutral backgrounds (urban grays, textured whites) and bursts of primary colors — ardent reds, solar yellows, and deep blues — that seem to burst from the surface.
• Lyric abstraction: his compositions do not seek to reproduce reality, but to capture its emotional essence. His canvases often evoke ephemeral phenomena: the reflection of light on water, the vibration of heat, or the bustle of a metropolis in transformation.
Exhibitions and Recognition
An active and recognized artist, Hoang Anh regularly exhibits in prestigious galleries in Hanoi and within national art collectives. His works are part of numerous private collections, both in Vietnam and internationally, charming with their ability to translate an Oriental sensibility into a universal, modern language.
"Painting is, for me, a breath, a way to fix the invisible energy that surrounds us." — Hoang Anh
