Miffy was conceived by the Dutch graphic artist Dick Bruna, who was born in 1927 - the year of the rabbit according to the Japanese zodiac.
In 1955, during a rainy seaside holiday in the Netherlands, Dick Bruna entertained his young son by sketching a tame rabbit that hopped around in the garden of their holiday home. Before bedtime he invented stories about the bunny, and thus the character Miffy (Nijntje in the original Dutch) was born.
The Miffy stories have now been published in more than 50 languages and more than 85 million copies have been sold. Miffy has her own TV series - Miffy and Friends - and toys and merchandise are sold on five continents.
Dick Bruna, now in his eighties, still lives in Utrecht. He has published 124 picture books to date (of which 30 are about Miffy) and is one of the most borrowed authors in Dutch libraries. Bruna has over the years illustrated more than 2,000 book jackets and more than 100 posters for the family publisher A.W. Bruna & Zoon.
Some artists of comparable significance, such as Basquiat, Picasso, Hockney, Lichtenstein, Sorolla, Banksy, Brainwash, Miró, Nara, Soulages, Lagasse, Ramos, Rothko, Lautrec, Klimt, Modigliani, Hirst, Chagall, Koons, Haring, Indiana, Mondriaan, Groening, Richter, Monroe, Kusama, Murakami, Testa, Villemot, Oldenburg, Hopper, Ripolles, Wesselmann, Magritte, Jenk, Orlinski, Wille, Rizzi, Manara, Thiebaud, Herrera, Laurent, Klein, Coa, Dior, Vuitton, Kaws, Valentino, Cappiello, Kandinsky, Warhol, Buffa, Tura, Castle, Ponti, Knoll, Le Corbusier, Robert, Johns, Starck, Breuer, Nelson, Mogensen, Ponti, Bertoia, Urquiola, Chillida, Magistretti, Gauguin, Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Botero, Katz, Braque, among others.
