Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
"Male Portrait", oil on canvas, 50×40 cm with frame, 40×30 cm the canvas alone, German School, dating to the second half of the 19th century.
The painting depicts the likeness of an elderly man captured in a three-quarter pose against a dark, neutral background, which flatters his volume. The subject is rendered with extraordinary attention to facial features: the silvery hair, finely treated, frames a face marked by deep wrinkles that tell of experience and dignity. The gaze, clear and directed slightly beyond the observer, together with a faintly sketched smile, gives the portrait notable psychological introspection. The clothing, characterized by the sobriety of a dark jacket, a starched white collar, and a black bow tie, denotes the sitter’s belonging to a solid bourgeois or intellectual class, typical of Central European society of the era.
From a technical standpoint, the work stands out for a skillful brushwork that alternates smoother, vaporous passages in the shadowed areas with more tactile and decisive touches in the lightest spots. The composition is dominated by a skilled chiaroscuro: light strikes the face from the side, shaping the forms and highlighting the texture of the skin through a warm, natural color range, in strong contrast with the coolness of the background. This approach fully aligns with the tradition of 19th-century German portraiture, which looked to masters such as Franz von Lenbach or Wilhelm Leibl as benchmarks for a realism that was not merely external, but capable of probing the subject’s soul. The work testifies to that transition between academic idealism and a cruder, more modern verism, where the almost photographic precision of the German school blends with a deep painterly sensibility.
CONDITION REPORT
Excellent overall condition. Work intact in every part with vivid and legible chroma and brushwork. The frame is offered as a courtesy.
Tracked and insured shipping with appropriate packaging.
