Magnificent original mixed-media work (collage + India ink on paper) by Eugène Eechaut, dated March 31, 1979.
The work depicts an elegant nude female standing facing forward, with a voluptuous and sensual body. The artist creates a powerful surreal and poetic effect by tearing the paper at the level of the head and upper body, then applying a dramatic collage with black and gold accents. The ink line remains fluid, confident, and minimalist, typical of the artist’s clean and intimate Belgian style.
Artist biography:
Eugène Eechaut (1928-2019) is a Belgian artist of French origin, born in Raismes and died in Brussels. Painter, draftsman, and watercolorist, he attended evening classes at the Académie de Saint-Gilles (Brussels) before developing his skills as a self-taught artist. From 1958, he received his first distinctions at the European Center of Art and Aesthetics.
A member of the Groupe Jecta since 1968, he closely collaborated with the prestigious Tamara Pfeiffer Gallery in Brussels, where he exhibited alongside great masters such as René Magritte (with whom he maintained a sincere friendship), Jean Cocteau, Félicien Rops, and many other major figures of European art.
His oeuvre, imbued with poetry, elegance, and sensuality, wavers between stylized figuration, fantastical compositions (notably inspired by the insect world), and pared-down graphic explorations. He is particularly renowned for his female nudes in India ink, executed with a confident and minimalist stroke that reveals the beauty of the female body. Influences of Gromaire and La Fresnaye. His work is featured in numerous private and institutional collections, including the Cabinet des Estampes in Brussels.
