Description from the seller
Title
Kumi Sugai - “Thunder (Small)” - RARE Early Abstract Lithograph - 1961 - Hand Signed - E.A. Artist’s Proof
⸻
Description
This is a rare and highly collectible original lithograph by the internationally acclaimed Japanese artist Kumi Sugai (1919–1996), titled “Thunder (Small)”, created in 1961.
Executed during a pivotal early period of Sugai’s career, this work dates to his time in Paris, where he was actively engaged with the European avant-garde. The composition embodies the dynamic, calligraphy-inspired abstraction that defines his early 1960s “Sign” period, a phase that is increasingly sought after by collectors worldwide.
Particularly noteworthy is that this piece is marked “E.A.” (Épreuve d’Artiste)—an artist’s proof, produced in extremely limited numbers outside the standard edition, making it significantly rarer than regular prints. Combined with the handwritten signature “SUGAI ’61”, this elevates the work’s desirability and collectibility.
Furthermore, the lithograph is accompanied by an archival data card from the respected Tokyo gallery Gallery Ikeda Bijutsu (Ginza), supporting its authenticity and provenance—an important factor in the international market.
Works from this early Paris period, especially artist’s proofs of this scale, are increasingly difficult to source, particularly with clear provenance.
