“The Sleeping Giant” is an aerial photograph by Italian photographer Sara Zanini, known for her drone work and for her visual research on urban forms observed from above, where architecture and landscape blend into almost symbolic compositions.
The image portrays the village of Centuripe, in Sicily, one of the most peculiar towns in the Mediterranean. Perched on the crests of the hills of the Etna hinterland, the inhabited center develops along a series of ridges that branch into space like arms and legs. Seen from above, the town takes on a remarkably anthropomorphic shape, often described as “the town that looks like a man lying down.”
In this photograph the urban structure becomes almost a monumental figure sculpted in the landscape. The houses with terracotta roofs cluster along the mountain ridges forming a compact urban organism, while the main roads draw bright lines that traverse the village like pulsating arteries. The evening lights turned on between the houses emphasize this impression, making the town emerge from the dark surrounding landscape.
The title “The Sleeping Giant” arises precisely from this visual suggestion: Centuripe appears as a sleeping giant among the Sicilian mountains, a silent presence shaped over the centuries by the meeting of geography, history and architecture.
The aerial perspective allows the viewer to grasp a dimension normally elusive to ground-level perception. The village reveals itself as an organic shape immersed in nature, where the density of buildings dialogues with the vastness of the surrounding rural landscape. The image thus sits between documentary photography and symbolic vision, transforming a real place into a almost mythical composition.
