Roger Selden was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 20, 1945. He studied painting with Isaac Soyer at the Brooklyn Museum from 1957 to 1962.
He attended the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he earned his diploma in 1966. During the summer of 1964 in Paris he studied painting with George McNeil and graphics with Antonio Frasconi. In 1966 he went to Italy, where he earned a Fine Arts diploma in Rome.
