Japanese Aka-Raku tea bowl (Chawan) made of clay from Japan, with a 10.5 cm diameter and 8 cm height, dating to 1970–1990, in excellent condition, bearing the inscription 八十一翁 〇山造 near the foot.
Description from the seller
Fine Japanese Aka-Raku Tea Bowl (Chawan) with "81-year-old Master" Inscription - Early to Mid 20th Century
Description
This is a high-quality Japanese Red Raku (Aka-Raku) tea bowl, characterized by its powerful form and a rare, intriguing inscription. While the specific artist remains unidentified, the masterful execution of the glaze and the detailed seal suggest it was crafted by a highly skilled potter or a sophisticated literati artist (Bunjin).
Key Features:
Glaze & Texture: The bowl is covered in a rich, warm reddish-brown Raku glaze. It features beautiful "Keshiki" (scenic variations) created by deliberate brush marks and the natural flow of the glaze.
Form & Technique: Hand-molded (Tezukune) with a rugged, tactile surface. The lower body and the foot (Koudai) show dynamic and confident spatula marks (Herame), typical of experienced Raku craftsmanship.
Rare Inscription: Near the foot, there is a clear hexagonal seal with a vertical inscription. It reads "八十一翁 〇山造" (Made by the 81-year-old Master [Name]zan). In Japanese ceramic culture, pieces inscribed with the artist's advanced age are highly prized as they represent the "pinnacle of a lifetime's skill."
Aesthetic: The bowl embodies the spirit of Wabi-sabi, with its imperfect symmetry and deep, earthy tones that would beautifully complement green Matcha tea.
Condition:
Excellent antique condition. No cracks, chips, or repairs. Please examine the high-resolution photos for details of the glaze and the seal.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 10.5 cm
Height: 8.0 cm
Foot diameter: 5.0 cm
