Karl Lagasse, a renowned artist, gained notoriety in 2009 with his sculptures One Dollar, ranking that same year among the ten best sculptors under 30 according to Artprice. In 2012, the New York publication Farameh named him one of the fifty best contemporary artists, inspired by traditional American icons, in its book FOR WHICH IT STANDS: Americana in Contemporary Art. More recently, in 2016, at the Art Paris Art Fair, the President of the French Republic warmly congratulated Karl for his impressive 2-meter bronze sculpture One Dollar, exhibited at the Grand Palais.

Karl’s artistic journey began at age 7 with collages, spurred by his meeting with sculptor César Baldaccini. He then turned to tagging and graffiti in the Paris metro while remaining passionate about collages. The artist Yvaral Vasarely encouraged him to fuse his tags with his collages. In 2003, Karl prepared his first exhibition in Paris, which led to his first personal show in 2006 at the Isy Brachot gallery in Brussels. In 2008, he returned to Paris with an exhibition mixing paintings, sculptures, and video elements at the Espace Pierre Cardin.

Karl particularly enjoys unveiling his works at international exhibitions. In 2011, he was represented by the Bel Air Fine Art gallery at the Art Monaco fair with his Cryptogram One creation. The following year, he presented his One Dollar works under the theme “In God We Trust” at the Artco France gallery. His 2016 solo exhibition at the Atrium gallery in Marbella, Spain, was opened by the mayor, who praised his works in front of the international press.

In 2010, he was chosen to represent Deauville at the Horsemania world equestrian championship in Lexington, where he created a horse sculpture dedicated to the event. In 2012, he offered Deauville his Cryptogram One sculpture, a symbolic bronze of peace and love, located at the city’s entrance. That same year, in collaboration with Corbis, he built a monumental sculpture for the Cannes Festival, using photographs from 1945 to 2011, signed by figures such as Alexandra Lamy and Matthew McConaughey.

The artist rose to prominence in 2009 with his “One Dollar” sculptures, which earned him a place among the world’s top ten sculptors under 30 according to Artprice.

In 2017, he was selected to design the trophies for the 43rd American Film Festival. Drawing inspiration from “Cryptogramme One,” he created a trophy in polished mirror-finish aluminum, bearing messages such as “Hope,” “7e Art,” and “Deauville” on its four faces. For the 46th edition in 2020, Karl Lagasse received a commission to create a new trophy, inspired by an emblematic Deauville symbol: the drawing of the barriers that separate the deck chairs on the Planches.

In 2016, France Culture mentioned Karl in an article about his monumental installation, A Piece of Heaven on Earth, which combines a Maserati wrapped in white plastic and a Jesus statue surrounded by dollar-shaped sculptures, symbolizing human debt. This work was unveiled at the Art Paris Art Fair 2015 in collaboration with Maserati. In 2017, he created the Deauville American Film Festival Trophy, drawing on his Cryptogramme One and adding messages such as “Hope” and “7e Art” on the trophies.
