The Wii (pronounced /wiː/ WEE) is a home video game console developed and marketed by Nintendo. It was released on November 19, 2006 in North America and in December 2006 in most other regions around the world. It is Nintendo's fifth major home video game console, following the GameCube, and belongs to the seventh generation of consoles, alongside Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata aimed to appeal to a broader audience through innovative gameplay rather than competing with Microsoft and Sony on sheer computing power. Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda led development, which initially carried the codename Revolution. The Wii emphasized new forms of interaction, particularly via the wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which featured motion sensing, gesture recognition and acted as a pointing device. The Wii was Nintendo's first console with native internet connectivity, enabling online gaming and digital distribution through the Wii Shop Channel. It also supported wireless connectivity with the portable Nintendo DS for certain games. The initial models were backward compatible with GameCube games and accessories. Nintendo later released cheaper variants: the RVL-101, which did not have GameCube compatibility, and the Wii Mini, lacking features such as online connectivity and SD card storage.
Because Nintendo placed less emphasis on raw power, the Wii and its games were cheaper to produce than those of the competition. The console launched with enormous popularity and, in some markets, was hard to find. Wii Sports, a game bundled with the console, became the Wii's flagship app, while new installments in the Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, and Metroid series further increased its popularity. Within a year, the Wii was the best-selling seventh-generation console and a social phenomenon in many countries. Total sales surpassed 101 million units, making it Nintendo's best-selling home console until it was overtaken by the Nintendo Switch in 2021. By 2025, it is the seventh-best selling console of all time.
The Wii repositioned Nintendo as a major player in the video game console market. Its popularity for motion-controlled games led Microsoft and Sony to develop Kinect and PlayStation Move. The Wii achieved Nintendo's goal of reaching a broader audience on home consoles, but it also alienated hardcore gamers. In an effort to win back this key demographic, Nintendo released their next home console in 2012, the Wii U, which, however, did not achieve success. The Wii was discontinued in October 2013, although the Wii Mini remained in production for a few more years and some online services persisted until 2019.
