Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was a Russian-born American painter and a central figure of Abstract Expressionism. He is best known as a leading representative of the Color Field movement, in which expansive fields of luminous color were used to evoke deep emotional and spiritual responses. Rothko attempted to go beyond traditional subjects, aiming to create direct encounters between viewer and painting that, in his words, “addressed the basic emotions of humanity: tragedy, ecstasy, downfall.”

His artistic journey began with figurative and surrealist influences, but by the late 1940s he had developed his characteristic style: large canvases with soft, feathered color fields that seem to drift on subtly modulated backgrounds. These meditative works invited prolonged contemplation and were often housed in immersive, chapel-like environments.

Rothko’s paintings are among the most valuable works of modern art. Several have sold for more than $80 million at auctions, with one work fetching more than $186 million in a private sale, reflecting their rarity and cultural significance. Collectors and institutions regard them as masterworks of 20th-century abstraction.

Some artists of comparable significance, such as Basquiat, Picasso, Hockney, Lichtenstein, Sorolla, Banksy, Brainwash, Miró, Nara, Soulages, Lagasse, Ramos, Rothko, Lautrec, Klimt, Modigliani, Hirst, Chagall, Koons, Haring, Indiana, Mondriaan, Groening, Richter, Monroe, Kusama, Murakami, Testa, Villemot, Oldenburg, Hopper, Ripolles, Wesselmann, Magritte, Jenk, Orlinski, Wille, Rizzi, Manara, Thiebaud, Herrera, Laurent, Klein, Coa, Dior, Vuitton, Kaws, Valentino, Cappiello, Kandinsky, Warhol, Buffa, Tura, Castle, Ponti, Knoll, Le Corbusier, Robert, Johns, Starck, Breuer, Nelson, Mogensen, Ponti, Bertoia, Urquiola, Chillida, Magistretti, Gauguin, Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Botero, Katz, Braque, among others."}
