Description from the seller
About the Work
This original Japanese painting depicts a beautiful woman (bijin) in a moment of quiet introspection. Titled Ureu — meaning "to worry" or "to feel concerned" — the work captures a fleeting emotional state with extraordinary sensitivity. The subject is shown in three-quarter view, her gaze lowered, holding a folding fan (sensu) delicately against her chest. A large circular window (marumado) forms a subtle halo behind her, lending the composition an air of contemplative stillness.
Style & Technique
Executed in the classical Bijin-ga style of Nihon-ga tradition, the painting employs refined mineral pigments and a restrained palette: a soft sage-green kimono patterned with willow leaves and scattered petals is set against a warm golden-ochre ground. The treatment of the face — porcelain-white, with barely-parted lips touched in crimson — follows the canonical aesthetic of Japanese court beauties. The elaborate coiffure, secured with multiple wooden kanzashi hairpins, signals the subject's high social standing. Traces of gold are used with discretion, enhancing the work's luminous quality without ostentation.
About the Artist
Okuma Ransetsu is a contemporary Japanese painter working in the classical nihonga manner, drawing on the legacy of Edo-period bijinga masters such as Utamaro and Eisen while infusing the genre with a modern psychological depth. The artist is known for intimate, mood-driven compositions in which the inner world of the subject is conveyed through posture, gaze, and the symbolic language of dress and accessories.
Condition & Details
The painting is presented in fine original condition. In brand new frame.
