This Vhils work features a fragmented portrait, composed of overlapping torn posters and urban textures. The face appears through subtraction, playing with a black-and-white contrast, highlighted by touches of color. The irregular edges emphasize the materiality and erosion, evoking memory, identity, and the traces of time in the urban environment.
The black background deliberately presents subtle texture and density variations, with faint marks visible. This is not a defect but an intentional artistic choice, in keeping with the raw and stratified aesthetic characteristic of Vhils' work.
This finish strengthens the sense of materiality and recalls the altered urban surfaces that the artist draws inspiration from.
Dimensions of the artwork: 70 x 50 cm
The work will be protected in kraft paper, inserted into a rigid tube, then shipped in a reinforced cardboard box.
Vhils, Portuguese artist born Alexandre Farto, is internationally renowned for his unique technique of creative destruction. Using chisels, explosives, drills, or acids, he carves directly into walls to reveal deeply human portraits. His work explores the impact of urban growth, the erasure of identities, and memory etched into matter.
Vhils aligns with artists who advocate engagement, such as Shepard Fairey, whose graphic aesthetic questions media power. His conceptual approach is aligned with Banksy, master of social satire. The lineage with Blek le Rat, pioneer of stenciling, is evident in his relationship to the city. He also shares Jef Aérosol's figurative sensitivity, focused on the human. Finally, his mural universe resonates with PichiAvo, the duo blending classical myth and graffiti.
His work also engages with major figures such as JR, Invader, D*Face, C215, JonOne, Sandra Chevrier, Snik, Mr. Brainwash, Murakami, Jeff Koons, or KAWS, each pushing the boundaries of street art and contemporary visual culture.
