Description from the seller
Cesare De Toni
“The Moment of Desire”
The work realized by De Toni in 1980 is part of the great figurative tradition, adopting a stylistic approach that moves away from traditional academicism in favor of a more direct and personal language. The scene, apparently classical, depicts a Venus lying in an environment suspended between interior and exterior, between intimacy and symbolism. Next to her, the figure of Cupid introduces a narrative tension: it is not a mere decorative element, but a living presence, almost curious, that seems to interrupt or perhaps amplify a private moment.
What immediately strikes is the stylistic choice: the forms are simplified, the volumes do not seek hyperrealism but an expressive synthesis. The painting renounces technical virtuosity to privilege a more direct, almost emotional reading that materializes in a human, everyday dimension.
The color palette, dominated by warm and deep tones, builds an enveloping atmosphere, while the contrast with the blue sky in the background opens a dialogue between earthly desire and a broader dimension that is almost suspended.
The work is not a quotation of the past, it is not “à la Titian”… but a reinterpretation of it, a work with its own identity. Where the Renaissance sought harmony and perfection, De Toni introduces a light discord, an intentional simplicity that makes the scene more accessible, while dialoguing with past masters De Toni creates an interesting balance, bringing myth into a more intimate and contemporary dimension.
