Description from the seller
INFORMALIST COMPOSITION – MADRID SCHOOL (c. 1960–1975)
Untitled Composition
Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 91 x 117 cm (approx.)
Provenance: Private collection from Madrid
1. IDENTIFICATION
1.1 Authorship
Madrid School, second half of the 20th century.
Work inscribed in the orbit of Spanish informalism, with evident affinities to the languages developed by key figures such as Antoni Tàpies, Manolo Millares, or Antonio Saura.
Presented as a work by an unidentified author, although its technical quality and stylistic coherence firmly place it within this high-level artistic context.
1.2 Technique and support
Oil on canvas, with material, gestural application and layering.
Pictorial structure based on accumulation, scraping, and spontaneous grafismo.
1.3 Dimensions
91 x 117 cm (approximate format)
Horizontal format with strong visual presence, typical of works with plastic ambition and exhibition character.
1.4 Signature and inscriptions
Handwritten label on the reverse with technique note (“oil on canvas”) and numbering.
Signature partially illegible, not yet identified with certainty.
2. ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION
The composition is structured around two large fields of tension:
– On the left, an organic vertical form, close to a head or eroded figure, treated with greenish and gray tones.
– On the right, a horizontal mass with linear structures that evoke signs, stairs, or constructive elements.
The background, in pinkish and earthy tones, is worked with intense gestural action, with splashes, incisions and layered coatings that generate a continuous visual vibration.
The work does not seek literal representation, but rather an almost archaeological presence, where the material seems to have been excavated rather than painted.
3. HISTORICAL CONTEXT AND SCHOOL
This painting fully belongs to the language of postwar Spanish informalism, developed in Madrid from the late 1950s.
In this context, artists linked to the El Paso group and its circle explored:
– Matter as protagonist
– Gesture as language
– Destruction of traditional form
The work shows clear affinities with this spirit, placing itself in an aesthetic line that dialogues with:
– Tàpies’ material density
– Millares’ structural rawness
– Saura’s expressive intensity
All within a coherent, non-imitative language that points to an author trained and fully aware of the plastic discourse of his time.
4. STATE OF CONSERVATION
Good overall condition.
– Sturdy canvas
– Stable pictorial layer
– No visible interventions altering the original reading
The work preserves its material and expressive force intact.
5. GUARANTEE AND TRANSPARENCY
– Provenance: private Madrid contemporary art collection
– Photographs taken under neutral light, without filters or alterations
– The work is presented with maximum descriptive honesty, within its real stylistic context
It is offered as an authentic piece from the period, without forced attribution, in accordance with professional cataloging criteria.
6. COLLECTING OPPORTUNITY
We are facing a work especially interesting for several reasons:
– Its undeniable plastic quality
– Its clear insertion into one of the most relevant moments of 20th-century Spanish art
– Its open authorship, inviting research and discovery
Pieces like this, when they emerge from private collections and outside institutional circuits, represent a real opportunity for the collector.
It is not uncommon for works of this profile, initially cataloged within a school or circle, to later be associated with concrete authors of higher value.
In this sense, the present painting not only functions as an aesthetically impressive work but also as a possible rediscovery piece within the panorama of Spanish informalism.
Professional packing and insured shipping.
The work will be carefully protected to guarantee its perfect reception.
