Oil painting Venice, an original 1960s Italian artwork in oil on canvas depicting architecture, signed, measuring 55 by 94 cm, and sold with a high‑quality gold Baroque‑style frame.
Description from the seller
For sale is a large, decorative oil painting. The painting is signed lower right with “E. Stadler, München.” A secured art-historical attribution is not available.
The work depicts a classical Venetian scene: A canal with gondolas and a bridge, masterfully captured in expressive impasto technique.
The thick application of paint gives the piece particular depth and dynamism, which varies depending on the angle of light.
The painting likely dates from the decorative painting sector of the 20th century. Very striking due to its large format and the elaborate ornate frame. Frame: High-quality ornate frame (Baroque style) that presents the work perfectly.
Condition: Very well preserved, colors vibrant, frame without notable damage.
Artist: Benno Stadler (often signed as “B. Stadler” or “Stadler München”)
Lifespan: 1908 – ca. 1984
Place of activity: Munich (representative of the Munich School of the 20th century)
Style & motifs: A well-known German landscape and veduta painter. He specialized in post-impressionist representations of the Alps (e.g., Chiemgau, Karwendel), northern Italian lakes (Lake Garda) and classical cityscapes such as Venice.
Market presence: His works are regularly traded in renowned houses such as the Dorotheum or Historia.
Special feature: Stadler often used pseudonyms for different markets (e.g., “H. Nilsen”), which attests to his broad artistic oeuvre in the post-war period.
