Description from the seller
Parforce Hunt: The Jump
Artist: Angelo Jank (1868–1940)
Date of creation: ca. 1910
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 78×58 cm
Object description
This monumental painting is an outstanding work from the mature period of Angelo Jank, professor at the Munich Academy and a significant figure of the Munich Secession. The work captures a moment of remarkable intensity during a stag hunt: a group of riders and hound pack in full gallop, frozen in the decisive moment of the jump over an obstacle.
The composition captivates with a spectacular dynamism of forms. With a vigorous and assured brushstroke, the artist renders the horse’s anatomy in full exertion — a stylistic signature for which Jank gained fame across Europe. The central figure, a lady in the Amazon saddle, lends the scene a note of elegance and refinement that forms an appealing contrast to the raw power of the motion.
History and renowned provenance
The special value of this painting is underscored by its documented history, which is evidenced on the back of the work. According to the original label on the frame, the piece was exhibited and traded at the famous Herm. Abels Art Salon in Cologne (Wallraf-Platz 6).
This art salon was among the most influential institutions in Germany and was known for its stringent selection criteria as well as the promotion of the great masters of that era. The presence of this seal provides the painting with an authentic guarantee and confirms its exceptional quality as a work that was part of the European art trade at the highest level.
A work of rare nobility that perfectly combines athletic dynamism with aristocratic elegance and is preserved in a condition that does justice to its historical provenance.
