Description from the seller
André Wagner (Germany, 1980)
“Hidden Layers”, 2016
Photography from the series Hidden Layers, in which André Wagner examines the perception of the human body through the overlaying of color, texture, and fragmentation. The work presents an abstracted view of the back, partially obscured by geometric fields of color. This visual layering creates a tension between visibility and withdrawal – the subject remains recognizable while at the same time eluding unambiguous legibility.
The work moves between photography and painterly composition. Through deliberate color interventions, a second layer emerges that directs the gaze and at the same time unsettles it. Body and space merge into a reduced, almost architectural form.
The work thematizes the fragility of perception: what we see is never complete – it is always a fragment, layered with memories, expectations, and visual filters.
André Wagner is an internationally active photographer with exhibitions, among others, at the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg and in the context of the Venice Biennale. His works are in private and institutional collections.
