Description from the seller
Virgin of Sorrows. Oil painting in Baroque tradition. 18th century.
An interesting devotional painting from the eighteenth century that depicts the Virgin of Sorrows, one of the most intense iconographies deeply rooted in Spanish religious tradition. The image shows the Virgin with uplifted gaze, a gesture of contained pain, and the chest pierced by the symbolic sword, an attribute alluding to the Seven Sorrows of Mary and reinforcing the marked emotional character of the composition.
The work fully responds to the language of religious Baroque painting, with a scenographic construction based on the dark background, the luminous focus on the face and hands, and an studied expressiveness that directs the viewer’s entire attention toward the interior feeling of the figure. Highlights include the delicacy of the facial modeling, the softness of the flesh tones, the elegance of the drawing, and the treatment of the drapery in rich blue tones, all within a formulation of strong devotional sense and notable visual presence.
From a technical point of view, this is a work of careful execution, linked to the Spanish school of Baroque tradition, following iconographic models widely diffused in 18th-century religious painting. The composition shows balance, quality in the resolution of volumes, and proper hierarchy of lights, aspects that reinforce its artistic and decorative interest.
As for its state of conservation, the painting surface shows widespread craquelure from age, coherent with its chronology, as well as occasional losses of paint layer and signs of interventions or old restorations visible in various areas. There is also surface darkening and varnish alteration, circumstances common to this type of works, which do not prevent appreciating its iconographic intensity or its general appeal. Overall, it preserves a very notable presence and an undeniable interest for collectors of religious painting, Baroque art, and sacral ambiance pieces.
The frame will be sent as a gift, with no appraisal value.
