These wall sculptures are drawn by hand in the wet clay and then, piece by piece, with respect and sensitivity to the 'individual character', in keeping with tradition and with craft from the natural material, cut. Each piece is thus unique, has its 'own character' and is finished by hand in my studio, glazed and fired. No mass production, but one by one made with love and attention.
The ravens are optimally protected in packaging and accompanied, as can be seen in the photos, by a beautifully designed inlay, professionally printed on sturdy paper, which includes a personal Artist Statement, and the underlying story referring to the role of the ravens: Huginn and Muninn from Norse mythology. The text is written in English.
This stunning artwork is an extremely original and special gift for yourself or for another special someone who is very dear to you. It will transform your bare wall into an open air space where the imagination can lose itself and you can freely soar endlessly...
Fun fact: a group of ravens is called a conspiracy.
Collect multiple ravens and create your own conspiracy...
Matthijs Homs - Artist Statement:
Through my artworks I explore and touch the boundaries between surface and depth, structure and spontaneity, dream and reality, nature and culture, self and other and past present and future.
Each piece I create is like an artifact of a lost civilization from an imagined history; a relic from a ritual that never took place in a dreamscape where the boundaries between fact and fiction seem to dissolve.
Driven by curiosity I engage with naturally and culturally charged materials and concepts. Accompanying and guiding them through alchemical processes I invoke a playground where space opens up for beauty, enchantment and contemplation on inner connection and silence.
I am an Arnhem based creator and work across a wide variety of media, styles, concepts and materials. I let myself be inspired by ancient mystical traditions like the Egyptian pharaonic, Meso-American and Norse mythology. I create modern day relics in which i make apparently separate elements come together. Through a wide array of media i reflect on thought models and systems of significance. As i play around with the different elements in a rhizomatic fashion i am questioning the fixity of 'things' and the significance they impose on us individually and collectively. I work rhizomatically, reflecting on the rhizome's open structure that is based on cooperation and interbeing; opposing, and coexisting with, the hierarchical competitive structure in which i feel trapped from time to time.
I graduated at the Fine Art department of Artez University of the Arts in Arnhem, the Netherlands in 2018. For more info about exhibitions, contact and to see more pictures of the ravens and of a selection of my other work check out my website.
