Alfonso Pozzi (1925 – ?) was an Italian painter, active mainly in the second half of the 20th century, known for his expressionist style and the characteristic use of the spatula technique.
Here are the main traits of his life and artistic production:
Biography and Career
• Origins: He was born in Rovescala (Pavia) in 1925.
• Training: He was a self-taught painter, developing a personal style outside traditional academic paths.
• Activity in Milan: He lived and worked for a long time in Milan (his historic studio was in Via Aselli). The city deeply influenced his poetics, making him a well-known figure in the Milan artistic scene of the postwar period.
• Recognitions: In 1981 he received the Ambrogino d’Oro from the City of Milan, awarded at the Accademia Ambrosiana d'Arte, in testament to his connection with the city.
Style and Subjects
• Technique: His stylistic hallmark is oil with a spatula. This method gives his paintings a tactile, almost sculptural texture, with dense layers of color that capture light in a dynamic way.
• Current/Movement: He is often categorized within expressionist painting, where color and application prevail over drawing precision to communicate the emotion of the moment.
• Themes:
• Lombard landscapes: His famous views of the Navigli and of old Milan.
• Rural subjects: Scenes of countryside, rivers, mountains and farmhouses, often rendered with a melancholic or vibrant atmosphere.
• Figures: Rare but present, often placed in urban or working contexts.
Critical Notes
Critics and art journalists such as Mario Portalupi, Walter Alberti and Antonino De Bono have written about him. His works are today in various private collections and periodically appear at auctions of modern and contemporary art (with estimates generally accessible, typical of the local Twentieth-Century collecting).
