Title
Kumi Sugai – “Blue” (1994) – Original Etching & Aquatint – Hand Signed – Ed. 26/100
⸻
Description
Kumi Sugai (1919–1996) was a leading Japanese abstract artist who built his international career in Paris, becoming a key figure in the European post-war avant-garde. His distinctive visual language—combining bold geometric forms with vivid color fields—reflects both Japanese aesthetics and Western modernism.
This original etching and aquatint, titled “Blue” (1994), represents Sugai’s refined late-period style. The composition features a dynamic contrast between a richly textured blue curved form and a solid black square, set against a striking red background. The interplay of shape, color, and surface creates a powerful sense of balance and controlled movement, characteristic of his “Hard-edge” abstraction.
Sugai’s works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris.
